Perfect 1,000
A high-planning-required game of math.
Requirements:
- Ages: 13 and up
- Players: 2 or more players
- Time: 10-20 minutes
- Each player must have a legal Promise deck
- One d10 or anything to generate random numbers
- Pen and Paper (Optional, but HIGHLY recommended)
- Calculator for each player (Optional)
How to Play
Setup
Each player must set their Promise deck in front of them, face down.
All players will place a line of 3 cards face up.
Each player draws 3 cards from their personal deck into their hand.
If using calculators, give each player a calculator.
Determine the Perfect 1,000 number.
Complicated Method:
- Roll the D10 three times. In the order rolled, these numbers are the hundreds, tens, and units place of the number. The thousands place is always 1.
- For example, the D10 rolls a 3, an 8, and a 1. The number is now 1,381.
- Write this number down if using a pen and paper.
- The value that the players must strive for are between the number and 100 above the number.
- For the example given, that means players would be aiming for a number between 1,381 and 1,481.
- It is helpful to write the range down as well if using a pen and paper.
Simple Method:
- If all of this is too complicated, you may instead just choose a number between 1,000 and 1,999 with a random number generator or by asking the players for a number.
The youngest player goes first.
Order of Operations
The current player may choose to do one of the following:
Possible Actions:
- Discard Stack: Discard all cards in one stack in front of them into their discard pile, leaving an empty space. Note: This space may still be filled in later with a card.
- Override: Place a card from their hand on top of any of their current cards, thus removing the bottom card from calculation and replacing it with the new card.
- New Space: Place a card from their hand into an empty space.
- Discard Hand: Discard one or more cards from their hand into their discard pile.
The player must now draw cards until they have exactly 3 cards in their hand.
The player will now calculate the sum total of all their cards. If it is within the range of the perfect 1,000, the game ends.
It is recommended to allow the next player to begin their turn while the current player is calculating.
Gameplay continues clockwise.
Ending the Game
During your turn, have the sum total of all of your cards valued at somewhere within the range of the Perfect 1,000 (determined in the setup phase).
Once the victory condition is met and the winner is declared, all players sort out the cards they have and return them to their proper owner.
Alternative Methods of Play
To make the game harder or easier, you may instead change the range of the Perfect 1,000 to a lower or higher value respectively. For example, instead of the range being 100 higher than the number generated, it can be 20 or 200.
To make the game shorter, remove the 1 from the thousands place.
To make the game longer, add a number to the thousands place, and add 2 starting cards down for each number above 1 that is the value of the thousands place. For example, if playing with 3,000-3,999, players will play 7 cards face up.
Additional Rules
If a player runs out of cards in their draw pile, they will simply shuffle their discard pile and use it as a new draw pile.
